Acupuncture
The doctors at Northern Illinois Medical Group think
outside the box when we are considering treatment options
for our patients. Acupuncture, one of the main forms of
remedial therapy in traditional Chinese medicine,
is a service we highly recommend as an effective means to
treat medical conditions such as mental/emotional
disturbances, physical pain, digestive problems,
respiratory and sinus problems, allergies, headaches,
chronic pain, weight loss, infertility and much more.
Acupuncture therapy encourages your body to promote
natural healing and to improve the way it functions. It
starts the therapeutic ball rolling by stimulating the
appropriate organs and systems to create more Qi
(pronounced as chee) and blood in the body as well as
addressing the specific problem.
Because the most common form of acupuncture employs the
use of fine needles, many people are often hesitant to try
this procedure because they associate needles with painful
medical experiences. However, our patients are
typically surprised at how much acupuncture does not
hurt. Although treatment experience is different from
person to person, some experience minimal pain comparing
it to a pricking sensation when the needle is inserted.
Never the less, no matter what services a patients is
receiving at Northern Illinois Medical Group, their
comfort is our main priority and we strive to make every
experience as pleasant as possible. Acupuncture at NIMG is
done in a sterile environment, with single use needles
only.
We also offer other
forms of acupuncture that do not use needle, see
below.
Acupuncture is gaining more and more attention as people
experience the benefits. It is practiced widely in Asia,
the Soviet Union, and in Europe. It is now being used more
and more in America by patients and physicians.
Acupuncture treatments can be given at the same time other
techniques are being used, such as conventional Western
medicine, osteopathic or chiropractic adjustments, and
homeopathic or naturopathic prescriptions. More people
have been successfully treated with acupuncture than with
all other health modalities combined. Let us know what
treatments you are receiving so our qualified staff can
help you get the most benefit from all your therapy
options.
Other forms of acupuncture include:
Cupping a therapy utilizing glass (or bamboo) cups
placed on the skin with suction, to draw blood toward the
surface assisting in blood circulation. It is a safe,
non-invasive treatment used to help treat colds, lung
infections, muscle and joint pain, and spasms.
Moxibustion a complimentary treatment to acupuncture
where a combination of specific herbs (moxa) is lit to
provide a heat source through smoldering. The generated
heat funnels through the acupuncture needles (if attached
to them), to the skin helping to treat disease and also
producing an analgesic, reducing pain.
Gua Sha a treatment that involves stripping of the
muscle/fascia with a rounded instrument, removing stagnant
blood, and promoting circulation and metabolic processes.
It is valuable in prevention and treatment of upper
respiratory and digestive problems, chronic disorders, and
illness.
* Laser used to stimulate acupuncture points with a
low-level laser beam instead of needles. Effective therapy
for treating carpal tunnel
* Electric another needle less procedure that directs
mild electric currents to acupuncture points on the skin,
helpful in treating things like bells palsy and sciatica.
* Tuina (Tui Na) a hands-on approach that utilizes
manipulation of specific joints and muscle tendons,
establishing a more harmonious flow of Qi in the body
which allows the body to better heal itself naturally.
Auricular simply put, it is acupuncture done on the ear
(with or without needles) to treat conditions that are
present anywhere in the body. This form is most widely
known for treatment in smoking cessation, weight
management, and addictionology.
